The Saanich or W̱SÁNEĆ are First Nations from the north coast of the Gulf and San Juan Islands, southern Vancouver Island and the southern edge of the Lower Mainland in British Columbia. Our traditional waters and lands are vital to sustaining our language (SENĆOŦEN), culture and traditions. The loss of these things impacts the resilience of our community – young and old. Returning our people to the water is how we can begin to remember the old ways, re-envision our futures, and recover our traditions, to make our community stronger.
The W̱SÁNEĆ people are “saltwater people,” leading a sea-centered way of life. From spring to fall, we moved around our territory on our sea-faring canoes, living off the bounty of the land and sea. Winter was the time to “put the paddles away,” settle in their winter villages, and gather around the fire to tell stories.
Our SȾÁUTW̱ First Nation cultural experiences offer guests a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the traditions, stories, and landscapes of the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples on both water and land. We invite you to our traditional territory to experience the profound connection between people and nature through our eyes.
Journey through the Salish sea, listening to the history and stories of the W̱SÁNEĆ people. Step off the vessel on Salt Spring Island at the ancient SȾÁUTW̱ First Nation village site. Journey back in time as you hear stories, listen to songs, and celebrate our culture.
Join your Tsawout guide as they share traditional stories, language, and legends on a unique wildlife and culture tour through the Salish Sea.
